The Basics of Dealing with Pet Poisoning

Often, our pets cannot distinguish between what's safe to eat and what is poison. It is up to us as humans and responsible pet owners to take care of our pets and to make sure that if they come in contact with something that might poison them, we handle it. For those in the Laguna Hills area, Trinity Pet Hospital is a perfect fit.

What Constitutes Poisoning in Pets?

A great place to start when dealing with potential poisoning situations is to learn what is considered poisoning. Not all things that are poisonous to animals have the same effect on humans. Poisoning in pets is the consumption of a substance that is harmful to them in any quantity. A great example would be cats and lilies. Lilies are poisonous to cats if ingested. This can lead to vomiting, lethargy, and even death in some cases.

What to Do When You Suspect Your Pet Has Been Poisoned

There are a few things you should do first when you suspect that your pet has come in contact with something that is poisonous or dangerous to them. If your pets are lethargic, but are not vomiting, they do not seem like they are in pain, or they do not seem like they are in immediate danger, you may be able to wait and make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible.

If your pets are vomiting, bleeding, seem out of their mind, or like they are in immediate danger, you may need to get them to a pet hospital or clinic to seek immediate help. In these cases, your veterinarian will likely assess the animal and may need to pump its stomach or keep it overnight to get the poison out of its system. With serious cases of poisoning, it is always best to seek the help of your veterinarian to make sure that your pet has the best chance at survival. With proper veterinary care at a clinic, your pet will most likely recover.

How to Protect Your Animal from Poison

It is important that when you introduce a new pet into your home you take the time to remove items that could be harmful to your new pet. When you take your pets out for walks or outside of your home, make sure you pay close attention to what they are coming in contact with as well. For those in the Laguna Hills area, Trinity Pet Hospital can help you keep your pets in the best of health.
