How to Introduce Your Child to a New Pet

Children and new petGetting a new family pet is an exciting experience, but it can also be overwhelming for both young children and the new pet. A negative interaction, like pulling the pet’s tail that results in a bite or swipe of the paw, can set the stage for future problems. Teaching your children how to interact with a new puppy or kitten will make the transition easy and enjoyable for all family members.

3 Tips for Introducing Your Children to Pets

Below, our veterinarian shares three tips for a positive introduction:

#1: Explain to your child that a pet is a long-term commitment. Children need to understand that the new pet is part of the family and here to stay, even after the novelty of a new pet wears off. To help your child understand the responsibilities involved in pet ownership, pick up some children’s books from the library or bookstore. Discuss how your child can be involved in this process (e.g., helping to feed the pet, take the dog for a walk under your supervision, etc.).

#2: Establish ground rules in advance. Yes, the new puppy or kitten will be cute and cuddly, but it is also a living creature who needs to be respected. Discuss rules for interaction in advance of the introduction. Establish where the pet will be allowed. For example, will it be okay to have the pet in your child’s bedroom or on the sofa? Make sure everyone is on the same page in advance.

#3: Supervise initial interactions. Your new pet needs time to adjust to his or her new home. Allow your child to spend short periods of time with the pet under supervision to be sure your child practices good behavior (e.g., no pulling of a cat’s whiskers). A child as young as five or six should never be left alone with a pet for extended periods, and even older children should be supervised until they have established a clear track record of appropriate behavior.
