Flea and Tick Prevention

Summer is here, and along with the warm weather comes fleas and ticks.  Here at Trinity Pet Hospital, we would like to help you keep your pets healthy and comfortable with flea and tick preventative medications.

Flea and Tick Dangers

Every pet owner knows that fleas and ticks can make cats and dogs extremely miserable.  They can create home infestations that can be difficult to eradicate, they can make your pet sick.  Fleas carry tapeworms.  If your pet accidentally eats a flea, tapeworms can develop inside your pet’s intestines, resulting in the need for veterinary care.  Fleas can also cause an allergic reaction on your pet’s skin.  If you notice your pet scratching excessively or hives and sores on your pet’s skin, it is quite likely that your pet is having an allergic reaction to a flea infestation.

Tick bites can cause a variety of severe illnesses, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme disease and Ehrlichiosis.  If you notice a tick on your dog or cat, you should remove it immediately.  The longer the tick is on your pet, the higher the chances of your beloved family member getting sick.

Flea and Tick Prevention from our Laguna Hill Veterinary Hospital

Our Laguna Hill veterinary hospital offers a variety of preventative medications for fleas and ticks, including oral and topical medications.  These medications are designed to be administered or applied once every 30 days.  The oral medications kill fleas and ticks within 24 hours of the pest biting your dog or cat.  By killing the parasites within 24 hours, they do not have time to lay eggs before they die.  The topical preventative medications start killing external parasites as soon as they land on your pet.

Both types of medications work by overloading the pest’s nervous system.  Some flea medications also contain growth inhibitors, which prevents the eggs and larva from developing into new insects.  For more information on our flea and tick medications, call our office at 949-768-1314.
