5 Tips for Keeping Pets Cool (and Safe) During the Summer Months

Warmer weather means more outdoor time for you and your pets, but it also means an increased risk for health problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Since pets cannot sweat to cool off or shed those fur coats on a hot day, they’re more sensitive to heat than we are. This means pets are more likely to overheat and feel the effects of a hot day.

Here’s how to keep your pet cool, safe and healthy this summer:

  1. Never leave your pet inside a parked car. Even with the windows open or with the air conditioner running, a parked car can quickly turn into an oven for pets. On an 85-degree day with the windows partially opened, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes! After 30 minutes, the temperature spikes to 120 degrees. If a dog’s internal temperature reaches over 104 degrees, irreversible organ damage can occur.

  2. Restrict exercise on hot days. Remember that pets cannot “sweat” like humans do to cool off on a hot day. Adjust the intensity and timing of your daily exercise accordingly. Limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours.

  3. Watch out for hot asphalt. Dogs and cats can easily burn their paws on hot asphalt. If you take your dog for a walk, opt for less radiant surfaces like grass or a pebbled pathway.

  4. Provide ample shade and water. If you’re outside with your pet for an extended period, take a break from the sun and relax in a shady spot. Provide your pet with access to cool, fresh water. If you’re gone during the day and leave your pet in a fenced yard, partially freeze the water bowl so as the ice melts, your pet has access to cool water all day.

  5. Watch for heatstroke. The warning signs are rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, vomiting, seizure and a deep red or purple tongue.
