5 Foods Not to Feed Your Dog This Thanksgiving

5 Foods Not to Feed Your Dog This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is fun for the family, but it can be dangerous for dogs that eat the wrong foods. Knowing which foods pose a danger for your dog can help you protect your animal companion and prevent emergency trips to the animal hospital. At Trinity Pet Hospital in Laguna Hills, we know how important it is for you to monitor and control the foods that you feed to your pet at this fun time of year. Watch out for these 5 dog-unfriendly foods:

  1. dog lying in leavesGrapes and raisins. Gelatin molds, salads and homemade cranberry sauces can contain grapes or raisins, which are actually fatally toxic to dogs.
  2. Chocolaty desserts. Sugar is bad for dogs, so there's basically no human desert that dogs should consume. However, chocolaty desserts are far worse because chocolate is poisonous. The smaller the dog, the less chocolate it takes to do harm, so be careful and keep your pet away from that chocolate pie.
  3. Onions and garlic. These common vegetables are found in practically half of the dishes we like to serve at Thanksgiving, including green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, soups and stews. Dried and cooked versions of these foods can be lethal as well, as can any member of the onion/garlic family, including leeks, green onions and others.
  4. Walnuts and macadamia nuts. Found in cookies, salads, on pies and in breads, walnuts and macadamia nuts can cause all manner of gastronomic and neurological problems for your dog.
  5. Bread dough. Raw bread dough will expand in your dog's stomach, causing vomiting and other symptoms.
