New Puppy Owner Advice from Your Laguna Hills Veterinarian

Veterinarian in Trinity Pet Hospital holding a new puppyCongratulations on your new puppy! You’ve got an exciting road ahead, and we can’t wait to help you on your journey. Raising a puppy is a huge commitment, and there’s a lot to consider. Here are some tips to get you and your pup off to a good start.

Bring your pup in for a check-up and vaccinations as soon as you can. Your puppy has natural antibodies that will protect them from many illnesses while still nursing. When your puppy is between six and eight weeks old, s/he should come in for his first check-up. We will give your puppy a thorough exam and start on a vaccine schedule to protect them from illness and disease.

Begin crate-training. Many dog owners falsely believe that crate training is cruel. In fact, a crate is a safe place for your pup, and can actually be quite comforting. It’s also a great training tool because your puppy can’t get into much trouble in the crate, which means you will have to make fewer corrections when working with your pup. To get your puppy used to the crate, be sure to make it a positive experience. Your puppy should have special bones, toys, and treats that are only for crate time. It’s okay to keep your puppy in a crate when you can’t be around to supervise, but please don’t use the crate as punishment. The goal is to create a safe and secure place for your puppy.

Put your puppy on a schedule. A schedule will help your puppy develop good eating, sleeping, and bathroom habits. Feed them at the same time every day, and always take your puppy out at regular intervals.

Socialize your puppy. You’ve got a short window of opportunity when your pup is young to begin exposing him to the world. Take this time to introduce them to as many new people, places, and things as you can. A well-socialized puppy will be more likely to grow into a confident, well-adjusted dog.
